As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 547,186. 25 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 13,278. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 282. 3,442 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 818 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 319 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
New coronavirus infections are expected to peak at the end of September or early October, a Greek Health Ministry official said Wednesday.
Speaking to a private TV channel Wednesday, Marios Themistokleous, secretary general for primary healthcare at the Health Ministry, also said that the National Vaccination Committee has green-lighted a booster shot for the immunosuppressed – that is, people who have undergone an organ or marrow transplant, cancer patients and those undergoing chemotherapy and dialysis patients.
A third dose will also be given to vulnerable groups and people facing serious health issues, while health authorities are considering expanding the plan to the wider public.
Booster shots will start being administered in early September, he said.
After Iraklio and Hania, the region of Rethymno became the third major town on the island of Crete on Wednesday to impose a week-long curfew aimed at stopping a recent surge in coronavirus infections.
The curfew applies from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., except for night workers and health emergencies, while authorities have also imposed a 24-hour ban on music at all entertainment venues, including bars and cafes.
The restrictions will be re-evaluated on August 25, when the curfew expires. Meanwhile, the curfew was extended in Iraklio and Hania.
