Update – 20/01/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 149,462. 30 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,518. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 320. 566 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 256 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 72 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The Greek government has no immediate plans to open other sectors of the economy, a government source told Kathimerini, noting that any further relaxation of the restrictive measures will depend on the effect the reopening of the retail sector will have on the spread of the pandemic. The debate on whether to reopen other business activities started on Monday after Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis said the government is considering whether to allow people to travel between regions, as a first step in reopening ski resorts.

At any rate, the next step for the government would be to reopen junior and senior high schools. There are two possible dates for this to happen: either January 25 or February 1. Kathimerini understands that the first date is less likely as the government will need more time to evaluate the epidemiological data from the reopening of the retail sector.

After the reopening of Greece’s market on Monday, health officials warn of a 2 month lockdown, if cases rise dangerously. Professor of Pulmonology and Director of the Pulmonary Society, Nikos Tzanakis, mentioned in a recent interview.

The European commission urges adults citizens to receive the vaccine. There is a goal of reaching 70% of inoculation in each country. Countries will be discussing the approval of a common tourism vaccination certificate allowing free travel throughout the EU and the World. Countries heavily depended on tourism such as Greece, Spain and Malta, are strongly in favor. Holland has expressed the worry that the certificate might end up being mandatory, restricting other passengers to travel.

“Any compulsory inoculation campaigns could lead to those who are already skeptical of the shot to become even more negative regarding vaccination.” As it’s mentioned in a greekreporter.com article.

An effective and quick covid-19 rapid test, based on saliva sample analysis, has arrived in Greece. Providing results in 15 minutes it could support a smooth process of travelers entering Greece.
