Update – 20/05/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 383,558. 53 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 11,587. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 642. 2,293 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 1,056 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 189 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The average age of new coronavirus infections dropped from 40 years to 39 this past week, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Wednesday during a regular briefing, noting there were 2,040 infections a day, on average, for the past seven days.

“The hospitals and health centers of all island areas … have been reinforced,” he said, responding to a press query about whether he was concerned that the reopening of tourism will expose islanders to more infections.

The areas with the highest number of infections per 100,000 people include Western Greece region, Attica, Thessaly in central Greece and the South Aegean. Last week, a spike in infections was recorded in the Regions of North Aegean, Ionian Islands, Crete and Epirus.

Kikilias also said that by the end of the day, Greece will have vaccinated a total of over 4,615,000 people. Of those, 1.7 million people have had both doses. By Friday, 3 million will have received at least the first dose, he said.

Speaking at the same briefing, Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) President Yiannis Retsos said the sector is prepared to host visitors in safety, while the sector’s goal this year is to protect Greece’s brand as a safe destination.

As the sector’s success is closely related to the coronavirus pandemic’s development, he said, any attempt to predict turnover and numbers at this point is risky.

Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias is heading to Kalymnos on Thursday where he will be briefed on the development of the pandemic on the island.

Kalymnos has been under lockdown since May 5 due to a rise in coronavirus infections. Under the measures, residents are only be allowed to leave their homes for workplaces that remain open, to visit the doctor or pharmacy, to walk their pets or for supermarket shopping until 6 p.m. The lockdown expires on May 24.

The aim of the visit is to coordinate local bodies ahead of the reopening and as the tourism season begins.

Hardalias will be accompanied by the general secretary of health services Ioannis Kotsiopoulos and the president of Emergency Aid Service (paramedics) Nikos Papaefstathiou.

Covid-19 vaccinations of people aged between 20 and 29 will begin in June, a government official said Wednesday.

Speaking on Antenna TV, Dimosthenis Anagnostopoulos, the general secretary for information systems, Anagnostopoulos also confirmed that individuals in the 40-44 age group will have access to all four Covid-19 vaccines currently available in Greece starting Thursday.

Only the AstraZeneca vaccine has so far been offered to people aged between 35 and 44.
