Update – 21/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Tuesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 15,142. 7 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 338. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 78. 170 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, dropping the daily number of cases below 200. 89 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

With winter approaching there is mounting concern among health experts that the current second wave of the coronavirus pandemic could transform into a veritable tsunami. This heightened concern stems not just from the spike in cases but also the upward trend in intubated patients and deaths, as well as the surge in demand for ICU beds. Indicatively, in Attica alone, the number of cases exceeded 1,000 last week.

Monday will see further restrictions in the capital Athens and the surrounding region following a spike in cases. More specifically, as of today a series of additional restrictive measures will be in force to curb the further spread of the coronavirus in the wider Athens area of Attica.

1. A 9-person cap has been set for all indoor and outdoor gatherings. Areas where special distance measures apply, such as restaurants, cafes, and bars, are excluded from the measure.

2. Concerts in both open and closed spaces are suspended.

3. Screenings of films in indoor cinemas are suspended.

4. A 20-person cap has been set for weddings, funerals, and baptisms.

5. Asymptomatic Covid-19 patients belonging to vulnerable population groups will be accommodated in quarantine hotels.

Moreover, new measures to be imposed on the public and private sector were announced to protect the health of employees. These measures include:

1. Mandatory teleworking for 40% of public and private sector employees performing office work or tasks that can be performed remotely.

2. Employees arriving at the workplace in three groups (7am, 8am and 9am) to prevent congestion on public transport.

3. Employees departing from the workplace in four groups (within two hours from the start and end of working hours) to prevent congestion on public transport.

4. Frequent checks will be carried out at workplaces of public and private sector services and fines imposed on supervisors/employers and employees who do not comply with personal protection measures in the workplace. That is, the mandatory use of a mask.

5. Rapid Covd-19 tests will be carried out by health authorities at workplaces of public and private sector services and congested areas of the areas in Attica with the most Covid-19 cases, including schools, public transport, and hospitals.

Thousands of people marched in Berlin on Sunday demanding that the government do more to help migrants stuck in Greece, many of whom have been made homeless since fires ravaged the country’s largest refugee camp. More than 12,000 migrants and refugees fled the fires, which the Greek government says were deliberately set by a small group of Afghan migrants to protest a virus lockdown at the Moria camp.
