Update – 22/02/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 179,802. 25 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 6,297. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 326. 884 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 437 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 57 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Greece began issuing a digital vaccination certificate for its citizens who have received both doses of the coronavirus shot on Friday. The certificates feature the vaccinated person’s data, including which shot they received against Covid-19 and when they completed both doses, along with a unique QR code.

Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of State and Digital Governance, has headed the effort to bring Greece into the digital age. Speaking to AMNA, Pierrakakis stressed that Greece’s vaccination certificate is highly protected from fraud, saying “the digital certificate is secure, it cannot be forged and has a digital stamp.”

Those who have been fully inoculated against the coronavirus are able to acquire the vaccine certification, which comes in virtual or printed form, the day after they receive their second dose.

An estimated 15,000 certifications have already been sent out to inoculated Greeks as of Friday.

Kalymnos, Kordelio-Evosmos under strict lockdown

The island of Kalymnos, located in the Dodecanese island chain, and the municipality of Kordelo-Evosmos, near Thessaloniki, will be under strict lockdown starting Saturday. Greek Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Chardalias announced the anti-virus measures, which call for the closure of all non-essential businesses as well as schools, during a press conference on Friday. The strict lockdown will be in place in the regions until March 1. Currently, Attica, Achaea, Evia, and Mykonos are under the same restrictions.

Coronavirus load still high

The viral load in Athens waste sample remains high, a professor conducting the research says. Nikos Thomaidis, Professor of analytical Chemistry at Athens University, said the viral load shows no significant difference from its levels 7, 15 or 21 days ago and remains “heavy and very high.”

“We are still waiting to see the effect of (extra lockdown measures) in limiting transmission (of the virus),” Thomaidis told TV channel Mega. Professor Theodoros Vassilakopoulos, a lung specialist, told Skai TV that at least the death rate is declining, a fact he attributed to the start of vaccination of vulnerable groups, such as the elderly.

Coronavirus vaccinations near 700,000

On Sunday, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias paid a visit to the coronavirus vaccination center at the ‘Ippokratio’ General Hospital of Athens. People who missed their appointments due to the snowstorm last week came in to get the shots. “Despite the fact Sunday is not a day to be vaccinated, today we are doing so for our fellow citizens who missed their appointments due to the weather,” the minister said. He added that inoculations will resume on schedule this coming week at National Health System hospitals, the Mega Center, and other centers as well. He also confirmed that the number of vaccinations done so far, whether for the first installment or the second, are nearing 700,000.

As Minister of Tourism Haris Theoharis has announced, soon vaccinated tourists from England, will be able to travel freely to Greece. Government officials are into discussions with the UK, as to make it easier for vaccinated passengers to move in between the two countries, without the need to perform a covid-19 test.
