Update – 22/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Tuesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 15,595. 6 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 344. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 79. 453 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, hitting a new record. 174 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

With a new record in coronavirus infections on Monday and the biggest concentration of new cases still in Attica, the government made it clear that a localized lockdown for greater Athens will be required if new restrictions that came into effect on Monday do not curb the spread of the virus. Briefing reporters on Monday, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said the authorities were determined to take “whichever measures are necessary to protect public health.” “We have never hesitated in imposing localized lockdowns, from March until now, in many parts of the country,” he said, adding that “Attica is no exception.”  The biggest concern is about central Athens, where numerous instances of overcrowding are being reported. In the coming days, Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias is to meet with officials from City Hall to discuss possible new restrictions such as the earlier closure of street kiosks and convenience stores in neighborhoods where spikes in infections have been reported.

As Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis prepares to travel to Karditsa today to assess the damage wrought by storm Ianos in central Greece over the weekend, efforts continued to clean up an estimated 5,000 flooded homes in that city alone, and to take stock of massive losses at farms, factories and other businesses in the broader area. ‘The scene in Karditsa is apocalyptic. Two-thirds of the city was flooded, and one-third is still without power or water,’ Mayor Vassilis Tsiakos said on Monday. Ianos knocked out bridges and parts of the road network in central Greece, while also claiming the lives of at least three people.

Travel disruptions are expected this week as Olympic Air announced 58 domestic flight cancellations due to a union strike, while mariners in Piraeus announced a walkout for Thursday. Olympic Air said it canceled 58 domestic flights on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – all between Athens and certain islands – due to industrial action called by civil aviation workers from 6 a.m. on Monday to 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
