Update – 22/10/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Wednesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 27,334. 6 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 534. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 86. A record high 865 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, raising the daily number above 800. 331 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Following the dramatic spike in new coronavirus infections yesterday, Greek authorities are planning new restrictions to curb the further spread of the virus, notably in regions that belong to level three in a four-tier response system. Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias said that the regions of Thessaloniki, Viotia, Larissa and Serres will be categorized as level 3 in the tiered system. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is to chair a meeting of health experts on Thursday to discuss whether to impose additional restrictions to regions which have seen a dynamic increase in infections.

A local lockdown will be imposed in the northern region of Kastoria, western Macedonia, on Friday after health authorities saw a surge in infections. The announcement came at an emergency press briefing by Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias on Wednesday, after health authorities announced a record-breaking 865 new infections in the country. Kastoria will become the second city categorized as level 4, or red, in a tiered system ranking the level of transmission of coronavirus and the potential for its spread, after Kozani. This means citizens will have to wear face masks everywhere, public and private gatherings will be banned, as well as travel outside the region. Shops, gyms, courts, restaurants, cinemas, museums and archaeological sites will close. “The next few days will be crucial in our efforts to halt the pandemic,” the minister said at the briefing and urged citizens in these regions to remain vigilant.

The owner of a nursing home in the northern Athens suburb of Agios Stefanos where several people were found to have been infected with the coronavirus, committed suicide early Wednesday. According to police investigators, the man was found dead in his home, after having apparently shot himself with a shotgun that was found at his side. The police did not reveal any details about why the man might have taken his life and appear to have ruled out foul play. Three residents at the nursing home have tested positive for Covid-19 in recent days, including an 88-year-old woman who has been hospitalized.
