New measures aimed at stemming the tide of rising infections, hospitalizations and fatalities from Covid-19 before the Christmas holidays go into effect Μonday across Greece.

Under the new rules announced by the prime minister and government officials last week, people who have not been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 or do not have a valid certificate of recovery will no longer be allowed into public indoor venues such as cinemas, theaters, museums and gyms.

Working hours have also been adapted to limit the impact of rush hour on public transportation, with retail stores opening at 10 a.m. and office employees adopting staggered shifts.

There are 35 students in the central Greek city of Larissa in danger of being kept back a year of school due to their parents who refuse to let them attend classes. According to an investigation by SKAI TV, it seems the children’s parents are refusing to let their children attend due to the mandatory coronavirus measures in force.

The schools’ administrations have contacted the parents to inform them that their children are of risk of surpassing the permissible number of absences and informed that if their children do not attend school after Christmas, they will be kept back a year.

There are approximately 10 high school and middle school students, with the remaining 25 being in elementary school.

Zante Metropolitan Dionysios has suspended 14 priests who refused to be vaccinated on Saturday. The metropolitan had given a clear warning and had asked that everyone in the Zante Metropolis be vaccinated. He has permanently removed one of the 14 priests and given the rest a deadline until the end of the week to get vaccinated.

The move by the metropolitan did not please everyone however and a small section of the island’s population shared flyers accusing the metropolitan of “satanic acts” and “illegal and inhumane” decisions.

Judicial authorities are using the provisions of the new penal code regarding the dissemination of fake news to go after denialists who encourage people not to get vaccinated against Covid-19 or accept life-saving treatment.

In Thessaloniki, northern Greece, prosecutors are investigating a hospital supervisor who had apparently urged a 51-year-old Covid patient to resist intubation before she died last week. The probe was launched after excerpts of a private conversation between the two were made public.
