Amid concern among health experts due to an epidemiological spike in northern Greece, Health Minister Thanos Plevris on Wednesday called for strict adherence to Covid-19 measures but fell short of announcing additional restrictions.
“We are here to inform,” Plevris said during a visit to the northern port city of Thessaloniki, adding that the government was making an effort to raise the vaccination rate in northern Greece which he said is in some areas below the national average.
Plevris and his deputy Mina Gaga – a medical doctor who is also the president of the European Respiratory Society – earlier met with local officials to address the surge.
On Tuesday a parent disrupted the operation of a local school, threatening teachers and a school principal after his son was forbidden from entering the premises without the results of a self-test.
Greece’s Citizen Protection Ministry, which is in charge of the police, announced on Wednesday that teachers will no longer be taken into police custody when they are sued by the parents of students who oppose the measures imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in schools.
Under government regulations, unvaccinated pupils have to procure negative self test results twice each week, while teachers will have to take twice weekly rapid tests. Pupils and teachers are obliged to wear masks.
At the same time, the government is planning to abolish the so-called aftoforo – a law permitting a swift hearing if an arrest is made within 48 hours of an alleged crime – in cases such as these.
The move follows a barrage of arrests and lawsuits against educators by parents who refuse to vaccinate their children or even wear face masks.
Two primary school classes in Thessaloniki were suspended due to a large number of Covid-9 infections among the pupils, the Ministry of Education announced on Wednesday.
These are the first instances of class closures due to the pandemic, which come just eight days after the start of the new school season.
The second grade class will remain closed until the end of the month, while the third grade is suspended until October 1.
According to the health protocols that have entered into force for the new school season, individual classes will be suspended when Covid-19 infections are confirmed in more than half (50%+1) of the students.
In this eventuality, face-to-face teaching will be replaced by distance learning.
