Update – 24/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Tuesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 16,286. 5 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 357. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 73. 358 new cases where announced yesterday, maintaining the daily number above 300. 194 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Struggling to buck the trend of recent weeks, the Greek capital remained in Orange Alert territory on Wednesday, accounting for 194 of the country’s 358 new reported coronavirus infections. Of those 194 cases, only 15 were traced to known outbreaks and five to recent travel inside the country, indicating the continued prevalence of community transmissions, which the government hopes to restrict with recent measures banning many public events, reducing crowd sizes, making masks mandatory in more settings and increasing inspections to ensure these measures are being implemented.

Intensive care units in Attica are under pressure as Covid-19 admissions continue to grow, a health official warned Wednesday. Speaking on Skai TV, the president of the Athens and Piraeus hospital doctors’ association (EINAP), Matina Pagoni, said that the Greek capital’s Attiko Hospital has begun to convert intensive care units into Covid-19 ICUs. She said that the Gennimata Hospital also planned to dedicate more of its ICUs to coronavirus patients. “Right now, Evangelismos Hospital has reached full capacity. It cannot take any more patients, it is full with Covid-19 cases,” she added. Pagoni said that a total of 580 coronavirus cases were currently hospitalized across the country. She said that the average age of intubated patients was 68 years old, adding that some of them were as young as 17 years old. Meanwhile, government officials appealed to the public to observe restrictions aimed at containing the spread of the coronavirus as a top prosecutor called for the arrest of individuals who refuse to wear a face mask where required and incite others to do the same.

Greek Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias announced that the government is preparing to introduce a platform to provide citizens with the latest coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions by municipality and by regional unit. According to the deputy minister, the platform will include a map of Greece focused on two levels, per municipality and per regional unit. Citizens will be able to see the degree of risk that applies for a specific area through a color-coded traffic light system: Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. In addition to the map, the platform will include a table which will list and provide information on the measures that are in force in accordance to the color categories. The platform is expected to launch on Friday on covid19.gov.gr, the official website with information on the measures taken by the Greek government for Covid-19.

Greek Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias announced that all outdoor theatrical performances in Greece will be suspended as of today, Thursday, September 24. He noted that open-air cinemas will operate normally (at 60 percent capacity as previously announced. The wearing of masks is mandatory when entering and exiting establishments, but also during performances.)
