Update – 26/07/2021

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 475,919. 8 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 12,898. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 134. 1,553 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 491 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 193 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The health minister has issued a fresh appeal for young people, but also to the citizens over the age of 55, to get vaccinated, noting that the online platform for 12-15 year olds should be ready by August.

Speaking to SKAI TV, Vassilis Kikilias said that the vaccine for the 12-15 age group has been approved and an announcement would be made soon about how the procedure will start. He also noted that about 30,000 vaccination appointments have been made by teenagers aged 15-17.

Meanwhile, the restrictive measures imposed on Mykonos have been lifted as of 6 a.m. on Monday. The measures included a 24-ban on music and traffic curfew from 1 to 6 a.m.

The European Commission has approved an additional 100 million euros for Greece in the business program for Reforming the Public Sector 2014-2020, which forms part of the Partnership Agreement for the Development Framework.

According to the proposal by the Greek Development and Investments Ministry, these new funds will be used to enhance the country’s public health system and improve citizens’ access to it. The resources will be channeled to support a network of mobile health units that will provide relief for state hospitals during the pandemic, as well as for improving services for chronic patients and supporting the mental and physical wellbeing of health workers.

Panagiotis Arkoumaneas, President of the Greek National Organization for Public Health urged recently those who have remained unvaccinated in Greece to get the shot, as he noted that 99% of people with the virus in the hospital, including those on ventilators, are unvaccinated.

“This is a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” he stressed. The Delta variant is much more contagious than the standard virus and even its other variants, and vaccine hesitancy in Greece could provide the perfect environment for the dangerous variant to spread.

Approximately 52 percent of the Greek population is now vaccinated with at least one dose, and 44 percent have had both their doses or were vaccinated with a single dose vaccine.
