Update – 26/11/2020
November 26, 2020
As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 97,288. 87 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 1,902. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 597. 2,152 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 2,000. 383 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 633 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
A record-breaking 597 Covid-19 patients are now intubated in Greece. The previous record for the highest number of intubated patients recorded in Greece was announced just yesterday, highlighting the increasingly critical situation regarding the virus in the country, where ICUs are at 81% capacity on average.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hinted on Tuesday that he does not intend to announce a plan next week with detailed dates on how the lockdown will be eased in December, but will go week by week depending on how the epidemiological situation unfolds. What appears certain is that schools – probably only primary schools and kindergartens – will be first in line on December 7. Then, depending on the course of the pandemic, announcements will follow for the opening of stores in mid-December. No decisions have yet been made about catering businesses, and this is not expected to be finalized before December 10. “Our next steps will depend on the data,” Mitsotakis said, referring to the issue.
The Hellenic Police made arrested 15 men and 11 women on Wednesday at a brothel operating in the central Athens area of Omonia in violation of lockdown rules. The brothel was located in a two-story building by police conducting a crackdown on illegal businesses in central Athens. Those arrested were fined a total of 18,800 euros for violating safety protocols to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Police said the main entrance of the building had been sealed when they got there. They then summoned a judicial representative to observe them entering the building. A Ukrainian and a Greek woman were arrested on charges of operating the brothel in violation of an order for its closure during the lockdown issued by the Municipality of Athens. Nine women were arrested for working (from Moldova, Albania and Romania), as well as 15 male customers (mostly migrants). In addition, a case was filed against seven of those arrested for violation of migration laws and they now face deportation procedures.
