Update – 27/05/2021
May 27, 2021
As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 395,094. 44 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 11,916. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 547. 1,517 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 762 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 163 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
Individuals aged between 35 and 39 as of Wednesday have access to all coronavirus vaccines – and not just the AstraZeneca shot. The platform is expected to open in full in the coming days for 30-34 year-olds.
A new government campaign is expected to be launched next week with its central message being to encourage people to get vaccinated for Covid-19.
The expediting of the vaccination program has become even more imperative due to increasing tourism on the islands and the mainland.
Speaking after the conclusion of an EU summit Tuesday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitstoakis said the option of vaccinating children aged 12 or older will be discussed as soon as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approves them.
Such a decision would “provide a new dynamic for vaccinations,” Mitsotakis told journalists.
The Health Ministry is expected to mobilize private doctors and organize them into teams trained for delivering Covid-19 vaccinations to thousands of housebound individuals across Greece.
According to official data, just 65% of the over-85 age group has been vaccinated despite being among the first to be offered the jab. Authorities believe that their inability to get to a vaccination center has played a big role in the low take-up, compared to 80-84-year-olds (67%) and the 75-79 age group (76%).
The Help at Home municipal program that delivers food and medicines to the housebound will also be brought on board to help organize the drive. How it will work will be announced in the next couple of weeks.
“Putting a doctor inside a person’s home is not a simple matter. You need very strict protocols,” says Anna Mastorakou, head of Greece’s Medical Association. “You don’t want them to be accused of bringing the virus into the home.”
Authorities could lift the face mask requirement in late September as long as Greece has vaccinated 80 percent of its population by late August, the president of the Athens and Piraeus hospital doctors’ association (EINAP), Matina Pagoni, told Skai TV on Wednesday.
Pagoni predicted that daily Covid-19 infections will persist at relatively high levels before they drop to around 1,000 in late June. The number of patients in the country’s intensive care units (ICU) will also gradually decline, she said.
