MEASURES/RESTRICTIONS

  • Two more patients of a Thessaloniki nursing home who had been infected with Covid-19 by a staff member have died, taking the toll from that cluster to 11, Skai reported on Thursday. The former patients of the nursing home in Asvestochori were identified as a woman aged 83 and a 90-year-old man. They died at the northern port city’s AHEPA general hospital. Recent outbreaks at the Asvestochori facility and at another nursing home in Evosmos, also in Thessaloniki, has promoted authorities to mull further restrictions on such facilities, on top of stricter visitation rights. The new measures are expected to be announced on Thursday by Deputy Labor Minister for Social Affairs Domna Michailidou during the Health Ministry’s briefing on the course of the pandemic in Greece.
  • Authorities announced that emergency measures at Ambelonas in Larissa implemented earlier this month have been lifted. As of Wednesday, 26 August and through to 6am on September 2, the midnight-7am curfew at bars, clubs, and restaurants remains in effect as does the 50 max cap on participation at social events, public or private, with the exceptions of restaurants, theatre, and cinemas.
  • On the island of Lesvos, which has imposed tighter measures due to a rise in cases, the central Vostanio General Hospital announced that regular surgeries have been suspended until August 31 after two hospital employees were found to be positive to the virus.
  • In the Greek capital, Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis announced the municipality’s action plan for the Covid-19 crisis as Athenians return from their holidays and schools prepare to open. In collaboration with the country’s National Public Health Organization (EODY), the municipality will be carrying out daily sanitation of roads, squares and public spaces in 129 neighborhoods, distributing free masks to students and teachers at all Athens schools, increasing staff at Athens municipal health clinics, and reinstating help hotlines and increasing blood donor days at municipal health clinics in efforts to meet the demand.
  • Workers in bright yellow vests stand on the dock in Greece’s main port of Piraeus, greeting hundreds of masked ferry passengers with fliers and the occasional temperature check. Free on-the-spot tests for travelers returning from Greek islands where outbreaks have occurred is the latest in an arsenal of measures authorities are using to tackle a resurgence of Covid-19 in a country.

HEALTH

  • In Attica, where experts expect the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the coming days due to the return of holidaymakers and the opening of schools, Regional Governor Giorgos Patoulis allocated nearly 100 million euros in funding to boost medical and nursing staff at 73 Attica health facilities for the next two years.
