Update – 27/10/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Monday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 31,496. 7 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 581. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 95. 715 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number at 700. 260 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

The number of new coronavirus infections reported on Monday dropped from Sunday’s 790 and Saturday’s alarming record of 935, easing to 715, but the number of new infections is still high, nevertheless, given that on September 26, EODY had reported 315 new cases and on August 26, 293. On Sunday and Saturday, the number of intubated patients was 84 and 91, respectively. Their average age on Monday was 65 years old, slightly lower than Saturday’s 66 years old. The Greek capital continues to bear the brunt of the pandemic’s second wave, reporting 260 of Monday’s 715 new cases, while the northern port city of Thessaloniki is also struggling, having 84 new infections on Monday. Ioannina in the northeast was not faring well either, with 52 new cases, of which 32 are connected to an outbreak at a food production factory, while Larissa in central Greece, accounted for 41 of Monday’s cases and Serres, up north, for 31.

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) said on Monday that they had conducted a total of 49,206 inspections for compliance with measures put in place by authorities to curb the spread of the coronavirus on Sunday, recording hundreds of violations. More specifically, ELAS officers registered 1,106 violations of rules stipulating the mandatory use of face masks in public areas and 260 violations of a public curfew between 12.30 a.m. and 5 a.m. Of the curfew violations, 179 were recorded in Attica and 31 in Thessaloniki.

Health teams confirmed 13 coronavirus infections in a nursing home in the northern city of Serres, Greek broadcaster Skai reported on Monday. The patients are seven elderly residents, aged over 85, who are asymptomatic but have nonetheless been transferred to Thessaloniki’s AHEPA hospital, as well as six staff members, the report said. The facility hosts a total of 100 residents and employs 30 people. Nursing homes have been particularly hit by the pandemic with at least three facilities reporting infections.

In spite of concerns about a spike in coronavirus infections in the country’s north, authorities are not currently planning any additional restrictive measures such as earlier closing times for bars and restaurants and restrictions on movement for vulnerable citizens, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Monday. Petsas said authorities were particularly concerned about the situation in Thessaloniki, Ioannina and Serres, which Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas on Sunday described as “one step away” from lockdown.

Petsas said authorities would take all necessary action to avoid the virus spreading across the country from the worst-hit regions. However, he said plans for additional restrictions – beyond the nighttime curfews and mandatory face mask regulations that came into effect on Saturday – are not currently on the table.

Stavros Keletsis, a lawmaker from ruling New Democracy, announced on Monday that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The conservative MP said in a Facebook post that he decided to get tested after an employee in his office in Alexandroupoli got a positive result to the virus. He did not specify when he received the results. He said he is asymptomatic and has self-isolated.
