Update – 27/11/2020
November 27, 2020
As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 99,306. 99 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 2,001. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 608. 2,018 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 2,000. 408 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 562 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
Greece extends the lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 until Monday, December 7, government spokesperson Stelios Petsas announced on Thursday. The lockdown extension was expected as the number of new infections remains steadily at 2,000-3,000 cases and the deaths are around 100 every day, despite the second, stricter lockdown. “There are some first signs of a decrease in the number of cases. If it continues at this pace, then the pressure on the National Health System will begin to ease,” Petsas said. “Only then we can plan a gradual return to some kind of normalcy,” he added. “At present, the existing restrictive measures for the protection against the coronavirus are extended until Monday, December 7, 2020 at 06.00 in the morning.”
First Covid-19 Patients from Northern Greece Transferred to Athens. Three patients from the Drama region suffering from Covid-19 were airlifted to hospitals in Athens on Thursday, as hospitals in northern Greece reached capacity due to the virus surge. The patients were transferred in isolation capsules inside an Air Force C-130 carrier aircraft that left from the Elefsina military airport on Thursday morning and landed in the city of Kavala, public broadcaster ERT said.
Reacting to the government’s extension of the lockdown until December 7, some doctors say it is not enough. Athanassios Exadactylos, president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, said the lockdown ought to be extended by two weeks, adding that he doesn’t see a drop in cases but a stabilization at high levels. “When we have 596 patients in intensive care units and a relaxation of measures brings in another 100…we will give up. The health system has a limited number of available spaces.” Exadactylos said a relaxation should happen when new daily cases drop below 1,000 and the number of patients in intensive care also drops to a “safe” level, for the system.
Matina Pagoni, president of the Association of Athens-Piraeus hospital doctors, said that the week of December 7-14 will be crucial.
Another scientist, Professor of Microbiology Alkiviadis Vatopoulos, told Skai TV Thursday that the lockdown could be lifted in stages, depending on geographical area and on activity. Vatopoulos added that schools should open first, then retail and restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs last.
Regarding travel inside the country, he said the scientific committee that advises the government has not decided yet but that it was traveling people that spread cases around the country. And while cases appear to be dropping in Athens and Thessaloniki, the hardest hit areas, this is not happening in the rest of the country.
“The pressure on intensive care units must abate” before the lockdown is relaxed, Vatopoulos said. “The infection rate is dropping, but the crucial (factor) is the (capacity of) the health system,” he added.
