As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 651,378. 22 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 14,751. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 322. 2,978 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 560 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 435 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
Vasilis Leventis, the leader of the Union of Centrists party, appeared to be making a slight recovery on Tuesday as he continues to battle a severe case of Covid-19 at the capital’s Evangelismos Hospital.
According to his doctors, the 69-year-old politician and former MP was taken off the ventilator in the hospital’s intensive care ward and his condition is now being described as “stable.”
Leventis, who has not been vaccinated against Covid-19 and had expressed his opposition to the shot, was admitted to hospital on Saturday after spending about 10 days under medical supervision at home.
His condition deteriorated rapidly and he had to be intubated later Saturday.
New coronavirus cases among children under the age of 18 have not shown a significant rise since schools opened two weeks ago, according to experts closely monitoring epidemiological indicators.
Indicatively, in the week stretching from August 9 to 15, the number of confirmed cases in children had exceeded 5,000.
According to data published by the National Public Health Organization (EODY), there were fewer cases last week – 4,309 new diagnoses were recorded in people aged up to 17 out of a total of 15,185, compared to 3,812 in the week of September 13 to 19 in a total of 15,627 cases.
Respectively, the percentage of cases in this age group was 28.4% last week of the total diagnoses and in the week before it was 24.4%.
According to the professor of pediatric infectious diseases Vana Papaevangelou, 1.5% of the hospitalizations due to Covid-19 last week were related to children.
For his part, the professor of microbiology at the University of West Attica Alkiviadis Vatopoulos told Skai TV on Monday that even though there is no large increase in cases in children, it is still early to draw conclusions.
“Schools have been open for two weeks, so in my opinion, the critical time has not yet passed,” he said.
Electronic crime fighters in the Greek police on Tuesday submitted two case files to an Athens prosecutor containing the details of four websites, four Facebook profiles and two Twitter accounts that are suspected of being used to spreading false information about the coronavirus and encouraging defiance against health safety rules.
The prosecutor has ordered an investigation into their activities, as experts continue to track down wrongdoers after receiving orders from Citizens’ Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos last week to crack down on the dissemination of false information about the pandemic and the measures to stem its impact.
The crackdown also seeks to root out individuals and professionals profiting from vaccine hesitancy and denial by offering false safeguards against the consequences of violating public health safety laws.
Lawyers encouraging citizens to challenge doctors and educators enforcing these laws are also in the Electronic Crimes Division’s crosshairs.
