Update – 30/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Tuesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 18,123. 5 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 388. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 79. 416 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, raising the daily number above 400. 240 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

The new spike in Covid-19 infections Tuesday, the majority still in Attica, fuelled fresh concerns among health authorities, who have been waiting to see the impact of a new set of restrictions on the course of the pandemic.

During a briefing to reporters Tuesday, Gkikas Magiorkinis, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Athens University, indicated that the course of the pandemic in Greece was still relatively balanced, suggesting that the second wave has yet to peak. Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias, for his part, played down speculation about additional measures. “The issue is not to talk about new measures but for those that have already been announced to be implemented,” he said. “Things can get better but they can also get worse, and that depends on us,” he added.

Hardalias was also asked to comment on the fact that repeat tests on 12 crew members of the Mein Schiff 6 cruise ship who tested positive on Monday turned out negative. He suggested that the correct protocols were not followed by the laboratory in Iraklio where the initial tests were conducted.

Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis joined eight of his EU colleagues this week in forwarding proposals to the European Commission for the better coordination between member states with regard to Covid-19 measures in efforts to eliminate uncertainty and restore safe travel. Greece, Malta, Austria, Croatia, France, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Spain on Monday signed a declaration for the better coordination between EU states with regard to travel that will focus on facilitating seamless and safe tourism within the EU and the Schengen area.

Impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and the slowdown in global travel, Greek national carrier AEGEAN recorded a 64 percent drop in turnover in the first half of 2020 to 187.4 million euros, the company said releasing its Q2 results.
