Update – 30/10/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Wednesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 35,110. 12 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 615. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 114. 1,211 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 1,000 for the third consecutive day. 335 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 275 in the Thessaloniki region.

Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he will announce a new “action plan” on Friday to help control the recent jump in infections, while adding that the regional units of Thessaloniki, Larissa and Rodopi will go into lockdown following localized spikes in coronavirus cases. “As in the first phase, when we took action early on, we must take tougher measures again and earlier than other European countries to prevent the worst, save lives and reduce the pressure on the health system,” he told his ministers during a teleconference on Thursday. He said the plan will be in place for one month. The use of a mask will be mandatory indoors and outdoors for the three new regions entering the highest level of risk from the virus, while a curfew from 12.30 p.m. to 5 a.m. will take effect, along with a ban on movement outside the peripheral unit. All gatherings in public and private spaces will be suspended. But Mitsotakis said shops and schools will remain open. “I will say again that our goal remains to avoid a universal lockdown, so we will proceed to further strengthen the targeted restrictions,” he told the cabinet, noting however that these policies must be implemented fully. He said the next two weeks will be “crucial” and called on each ministry to ensure the implementation of the law, such as teleworking. Mitsotakis said he believed Greece is 2 to three weeks behind other European countries in the development of the second wave of the pandemic.

The regional units of Serres and Ioannina in north and northwestern Greece went officially into lockdown on Thursday, after a local spike in coronavirus infections in the past few days. This means the use of a mask is mandatory indoors and outdoors, a curfew from 12.30 p.m. to 5 a.m., a ban on movement outside the peripheral unit, as well as the suspension of all gatherings in public and private spaces.

The coronavirus alarm level in the northern Greek regions of Thessaloniki and Rodopi, and Larissa in central Greece, is being raised to the highest level, 4, on Friday and localized lockdowns will be imposed to stem a surge in new coronavirus cases, Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias said on Thursday.

The regional units of Pella, Evros, Drama, Xanthi, Kilkis, Kavala, Pieria, Imathia and Halkidiki are also being elevated, going up to Level 3 of the risk assessment scale, Hardalias added, saying that details of the new restrictions will be unveiled on Friday, when his agency’s coronavirus alert map is updated to reflect the most recent transmission data.

A microbiologist on Greece’s coronavirus expert committee warned on Friday morning that at the current rate of transmission, new infections could reach and pass the 2,000 mark this weekend. Speaking to Skai television, West Attica University Professor Alakiviadis Vatopoulos said that new daily infections appear to be doubling on a weekly to 10-day basis, jumping from around 400 at the start of the month to 800 and now reaching well over 1,000 within a few weeks. He also stressed that the majority of new infections right now concern young people, warning that the situation will get a lot worse in terms of fatalities and the health system’s ability to cope, when transmission starts affecting older individuals.
