Update – 30/11/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 104,227. 98 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 2,321. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 603. 1,193 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, dropping the daily number to close to 1,000. 247 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 235 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The threshold of 100,000 confirmed Covid-19 diagnoses cases in Greece has been passed over the weekend. On Saturday, Greek authorities announced a record 121 deaths from the coronavirus over 24 hours. Over 300 deaths were recorded over the weekend.

Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the coronavirus-ravaged port city of Thessaloniki in Central Macedonia on Saturday, where he urged people to get the coronavirus vaccine as soon as it becomes available. ”It’ll be free-of-charge, it will not be mandatory but we rely on the common sense of our fellow citizens,” Mitsotakis noted. The Premier visited the ”Ippokrateio” hospital, where he met with nurses and doctors who are fighting the deadly second wave of the pandemic.

The PM admitted that the country’s National Health Service is under pressure, however, he noted that ”it still stands and it will continue to stand,” expressing his gratitude to the city’s nurses and doctors for their tremendous service to the Greek society. The Premier also referred to the upcoming vaccination against the COVID-19, noting that he expects as many citizens as possible to get the vaccine.

Greece Mulls Lockdown Extension to December 14. The Greek government is considering a potential new extension to the nationwide lockdown until December 14, several Greek media reported on Saturday. The current lockdown began earlier in November and was scheduled to be lifted on December 1. However, the government’s spokesperson Stelios Petsas announced on Thursday that the restrictive measures will have to last until December 7. Now, and due to the dramatic figures that are being revealed on a daily basis in terms of deaths and intubations, the government is considering yet another extension of the curfew.

One in three respondents of a survey conducted in Greece say they will not voluntarily be vaccinated against Covid-19, despite the vaccine being made available for free when it does arrive. According to the survey by polling company Pulse on behalf of Skai.gr on Thursday, 30% of respondents say that they will avoid the shot. Of those, 16% say they will certainly not be vaccinated and 14% say they most likely will not be vaccinated voluntarily. Overall, 64% of citizens state that they will “certainly” or “likely” receive the vaccination.

The coronavirus vaccination program for the general public in Greece will be on a voluntary basis. A public information campaign will kick off when the shots are made available, aiming to convince a sufficient number of people of the merits of vaccination.

At least twenty-one members of the Greek Parliament have expressed their will to work on a voluntary basis for Greece’s National Health Service (NHS), known in Greece as ”ESY” to help fight the ravaging second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. It all began last week when George Lambroulis, MP for the Greek Communist Party and Vice-President of the Parliament asked the Speaker of the House to excuse him from his vice-presidential duties to go and volunteer in a hospital. Since then, four MPs from the ruling New Democracy party, ten from the main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance party, five from the KINAL party, one from the Communist party, and another one from the Greek Solution party have asked to go and help hospitals either in their own constituencies or anywhere the Ministry of Health sees fit.

During a news briefing of the Ministry on Friday, Deputy Health Minister Vassilis Kontozamanis said that Greek members of Parliament who wish to offer their services as doctors in fighting the coronavirus pandemic will have to sign a contract with the NHS, work a full-time schedule and face the same liabilities as other NHS staff.
